Wedges are cool. Stilettos are pretty. But the new shoe trend for spring 2019 is a lot more, shall we say, visually interesting? We’re talking about the sculptural heel, a trend that French designer Jacquemus originated in 2017, but that’s being interpreted by other fashion brands this season.

The trend is characterized by its abstract heels, usually comprised of incongruous, geometric shapes and patterns. It looks as if the shoe is almost dethatched from the heel, resting on an intricately-shaped block of wood or metal.
