Gents: Here’s how to nail the tone-on-tone look
Dressing all in one color—known in sartorial terms as tone-on-tone—may seem daunting, especially if you’re a dude who considers yourself more safe or timid when it comes to fashion. But trust us, wearing one color palette from head to toe is easier than you think… and is perfectly on-trend for summer.
The main thing to keep in mind when pulling off the tonal look is that you don’t sport an entire outfit in the same color, but rather in the same color family. If you’re rocking a navy suit, for instance, try pairing it with a steel blue tie or button-up shirt. Charcoal gray pants pair well with a silver checkered shirt, while a deep purple ensemble looks elegant and regal against a lavender or violet tie. Mixing these tones is key as is mixing textures, such as cotton, linen and silk.
Another tip? Keep to a muted palette of browns, grays, deep blues and jewel tones, especially if you’re new to the trend. Pink suits are great and all, but not necessarily in this situation!
Lastly, make sure your shoes and accessories such as belts, pocket squares and hats aren’t too matchy-matchy—otherwise you’re heading into overkill territory.
Many of Garmany’s favorite menswear designers including Brunello Cucinelli, Corneliani and Canali are all about this tone-on-tone trend, showing entire outfits in one hue and offering up complimentary pieces and accessories to pair with them.
