Hail the Hoodie
The humble hoodie has come a long way from sporting events and the sofa. These days, designers have created hoodies with better cuts and nicer fabrics—even cashmere—elevating the casual wardrobe staple to respectable sartorial status.
With their new slimmer silhouette, high-end hoodies can be layered under a sportcoat or jacket just as you would a sweater. A designer hoodie paired with dark denim or corduroys and dress shoes or nice sneakers could work in a creative office or out on a date.
But just as the details on a suit, like mother of pearl buttons, set it apart from lesser models, so too do the details make the hoodie. What to look for in a high-end hoodie? Things like flatlock seams, two-way zippers, dyed to match drawstrings, heavy metal hardware and side gussets. And, of course, the fabric makes a big difference. Hand-woven cashmere feels divine, but even 100 percent cotton is a huge improvement over the usual polyester blend. Add design details like leather trim or color blocking, and you’ve got a much-improved sweatshirt than the one you wore as a teen.
